1928
John T. Simpson started his
Business near Grimsby
Docks
buying local grocers empty
wooden Corned Beef,
Jellied
Veal boxes Danish butter
barrels repairing them and
Selling
them and delivering them on
a handcart to Fish
Merchants
to send their fish away in.
Those
days timber was scarce and
any type of second
hand
timber was used to make fish
boxes.
Which
eventually where delivered
by horse and cart? Then
by
ex-army lorries.
1955
Carl
Radcliffe Joined the Firm
Taking over a box making
business on the fish docks
after three years we
reorganized the three
separate factories into one
unit in Albert Street, Where
we had progressed to nailing
machines and importing non
returnable fish box sets (ready
cut to size timber) from
Portugal. These boxes of
Portuguese Pine used to do
one journey then
be
discarded (The
same
timber
as
the
cheap
Fences
are
made
of
today). We only use
Russian or home grown Pine
to
make strong fences that will
last, these days.
1963
The old premises in Albert
street where demolished
and new
premises built also the
company was made into
a limited
company with John Simpson
and Carl Radcliffe
(Son in
law) as directors.
1970
after the Cod-war we found
we had to diversify the
business.
So we moved into DIY selling
timber, melamine,
wallboards, plywood etc
and
cutting this up to size for
customers. Building a shop
and eventually offering a
good sawing and delivery
service.
1979
Tim Radcliffe started work
with the company.
1980
The Fish box making side of
the business had ceased
but we
concentrated on DIY, Fencing
and making Large
packing
cases for engineering
industry exports.
2000
Top quality Joinery
manufacturing was introduced
making
anything that customers
required. Sheds, Summer
Houses,
Play houses, Kitchen and
bedroom Cabinets
Worktops
and doors. Also the new
trend of Central heating
radiator
covers, to lots of different
styles.
